Contra Entry- wages taken out of account

My final payment (wages) of employment was put into my bank account early on the 28th of March, a couple of hours after it was taken out again. On looking at my statement the term 'Contra Entry' was visable and the whole amount was taken out.
I contacted the Halifax who were sympathetic but said I had to contact my employer, which happens to be a NHS trust.
I contacted HR they said it was down to payroll. I contacted payroll who said that it was due to a mistake by HR and as soon as they get the money back, it will be repaid to me. Apparently this will take a week. The money is no longer in my account, I am in the red.
However, this now means that I will default on my direct debits that are due to come out earlier in the week, the bank has told me that I will incur charges for an unauthourised overdraft.
This does not seem to be fair, is there anything I can do about this? I am absolutely skint, I cant feed myself or pay my fares to my new place of work, I don't know what to do.

It's a BACS Direct Credit that's been recalled by your payroll people. You need to concentrate on them - as it's nothing to do with the Bank.
Contact them Monday and ask they CHAPS the money into your account. And add some extra to cover the charges etc.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Does it have to be CHAPS these days? Faster payments would do.0
