    2. A few days before I know that I'm going part exchange a car, knowing that I need a small amount of fuel in the interim but not wanting to waste money on a full tank.

A dangerous game, but reminds me of a fantastic one my mum pulled when part-exing her old car many years back.

She put just enough fuel in, or so she thought, but actually ran out just before the motorway junction she needed.

So she rolled it down the motorway, down the sliproad, left turn, rolled it into the dealers forecourt and parked facing forward in a parking space, collected her new car and drove home.
