Be careful who you give your credit card number to?

...You need to understand that you gave authority to WO to take money from your card originally - Barclaycard were not involved in your instructions. ...
Telling WO not to take any more money from my account (which i did incidentally - by letter) was like telling a school boy not to eat the chocolates whilst your are out of the room - it's ridiculous - calling them 'a company' seems to lend some credibility to something that was no better than back street garage operation
Hence my conversation with Barclaycard - my idea was putting them on stop - not going to happen according to BClay
and I remind others to be aware
Wont be getting another Bcard if they cant act upon my specific instructionWhen will the "Edit" and "Quote" button get fixed on the mobile web interface?0 -

I don't think you are understanding the advice that other posters have given you.
Barclaycard cannot stop these payments. You have allowed a company to set up a continuous payment authority. This is not like a direct debit which you can cancel at your bank. These payments can only be stopped by the company you agreed a CPA with.
When I started reading these forums many years ago, one of the most emphasised pieces of advice given was never to allow anyone to set up a CPA on your credit card. It was excellent advice which I have always followed and never had an issue.
I'm sorry if you can't accept the advice give here by many knowledgeable posters, as they are correct.0 -
As above, you are not understanding how it works.
Once you give CPA (continuous payment authority) on a credit card, no-one can stop this apart from the company you gave it to, WO in this case. Neither you nor Barclaycard can stop it.
It doesn't matter whether you cut up the card or close the account, if WO continue to request payment against the card, the debt is still yours.
You say you have already written to the company requesting that they stop taking payments. Was this by a signed for service?
You need to forward a copy of the letter to BC as proof.0 -

Do you actually want to learn how these things work so that you can manage your finances better in the future or did you just want to whinge? Because people are going out of their way to explain what happened here, and you seem to be going out of your way to miss the point.and I remind others to be aware
Many of us are aware of how CPAs work. That's why we are very cautious about agreeing to them. I can see why you're upset, they are a bit of a crappy deal for us customers, but you can learn how these things work then take control of your finances or you can just fume with impotent rage.Your choice.Wont be getting another Bcard if they cant act upon my specific instructionIf you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0 -
Was this a business barclaycard or a personal one?
I received an email from Barclaycard on 5 March about a load of changes to terms and conditions. In there was:
How you can authorise payments (Condition 15)
Condition 15.1: We've made a minor change to the way we describe how transactions are authorised. It doesn't change the ways in which you can authorise transactions.
Condition 15.2: We've updated this condition to explain if you want to withdraw your consent to future recurring transactions, you can now tell us. We still recommend you contact the retailer first because they initiate the transactions. If transactions are still processed we'll refund them, together with associated interest and charges
The way I read number 15.2, this would say they can do something about CPA's.Indecision is the key to flexibility0 -
I believe banks are finally doing something about CPA's, there used to be an article on MSE but I can't find it at the moment. I think it's related to the Payment Services Directive that finally was implemented, although I can confirm that both Visa and Mastercard guidelines since at least November last year said that if the card holder can prove they attempted to discuss with the merchant then it becomes the banks responsibility.0

Hmmm well that's really a case of the guidelines catching up with legal reality. No need to discuss - you can withdraw authority anytime, whether or not the merchant responds. In fact really the law doesn't require you to prove your attempt, it requires the CC to prove the payment was authorised which would include proving that you didn't remove your authority. But the proof is only balance of probabilities, so evidence of the attempt would be jolly handy.
I remember the Barclaycard change - not sure how they can reconcile that with the visa/mastercard system and I don't see a legal issue that requires the change. (They seem to be saying you don't even need to notify the merchant. Perhaps the way it works is that they will notify via the system on your behalf. Otherwise it seems to me somewhat unfair on the merchant who might still be supplying a service.)0
