hi all

when im driving along the road my car will suddenly lose power, i have to drop down the gears, after a few seconds it surges forward again and is fine, its like their is a fuel problem,i stopped on the m5 and called my breakdown cover they checked various things but didnt find anything. being that i was able to drive it i took it to my brother in-laws garage,he fitted a new fuel filter as a first step and i drove it home 35 miles and then to work today (35 miles) and was fine.
but on the way home today the problem started again. i called my brother -in-law and he says he doent really know what else to do or is not interested.
can anyone give any pointers please

Was the old filter very dirty? Just possible that you have an attack of diesel bug in the tank which is rapidly blocking the filter - check the current one for black stuff.

Is it a 1.9 tdi? Whats the engine code? It could be going into limp mode from over boost which is common on the VAG pd diesel lump.

This is due either to sticky variable vains, vacuum system leak, N75 valve faulty. If you google limp mode 1.9 tdi.

The best thing is take it to a VAG specialist and get it plugged into diagnostics.

I had the same symptoms years ago on a Ford Escort TDi. As well as what you describe it would sometimes be fine on the flat under minimum load but be almost unable to climb a gradient.

It turned out to be some of the valves not making a gas tight seal leading to power loss. I can't remember the exact issue, it may have been valve guides or springs.
