pc problem now usb ports dont work

hi there

yesterday my pc went on the blink, all i was doing at the time was copying files from one drive to another.

my monitor went blank and i could not switch the pc off using the front power button, i had to switch off at the back, i switched it on a few times and still nothing, there was a slight smell as if something had overheat but it was only slight.

after half an hour i tried again and to my surprise it started ok and i had a picture on my monitor however my usb mouse and keyboard were not working and my usb wireless network adapter was not working. my usb ports are onboard 4 rear and 2 front.

im using an old mouse and keyboard just now and connected to my modem with a network cable but my usb ports are not working. I checked the bios settings and the usb controllers are still enabled and usb mouse and keyboard are still enabled. in device manager all the usb controllers look ok ie no conflicts.

can anyone help me here to find out what is wrong and possibly fix this or does it sound as if my motherboard has a fault with cant be fixed.

try resetting the cmos - there is often a jumper on the mainb0oard for this or simply remove the cmos battery and insert it again after about 10 seconds

If you still can't use the usb keyboard even in the bios then it sound like the usb controller on the mainboard has blown. Time to get a new motherboard.

Could be the processor overheating? The BIOS usually has a setting which will power down the PC to prevent damage.

Open the box and check that the cooling fins haven't got clogged up with dust.

In device mgr try deleting the USB and then restart.

If the hardware has gone it won't find them on startup. If it does find them then you may have got away with it, although you may need to reload the drivers.

You can get USB cards from Ebay for about £6 onward.

Any further smell of overheating discontinue use immediately.

try deleting the usb controllers from device manager then reboot and see if windows finds them again.
if you don't want to buy a new mb then you could buy a pci card with usb ports for about £15, but then something else could blow...
    how old is your mb?
  • i have tried deleting the usb controllers in device manager and then rebooting, it installs all the drivers but they still dont work .

i have unplugged the front usb cables and reconnected them but still no joy

i have cleared the cmos and still no result

i plug my usb flash memory stick into a usb port and the red light comes on so there is power but nothing is working when plugged in

my motherboard is about 2 years old at a guess i got it second hand with my htpc

Unplug the power completely from the pc, that is disconnect the power lead as well. Leave for 10 15 mins and try again,
:confused:I have nothing better to do!!!!
