wrong cheque amount paid out!

Hi, I have just had an awful week! I sent a cheque of £24.35 to a business only for £635.01 be taken from my account instead. This sent my account into being overdrawn by over £500. the business I sent the cheque to confirmed that they had it and my account was paid, but when I queried the bank they said that it would take a few days to get the cheque faxed to them for them to check it out, my account was not put back to how it was until today, and they were still adding charges also untill today baut they have been taken off now. I had a phone call asking what I thought would be a fair compensation amount for my troubles and didnt know what to say, has anyone got any idea?
I queried the cheque on monday at 9.30, and this was just sorted out 3.00 friday. I have also not been able to use this account or the money that should have been on it.

In future, use bank transfers, not cheques. If a payee can accept a cheque, they can also accept a bank transfer, as both go into a bank account.
