urgent - possible credit card fraud!

egg called me today to verify couple of transactions - one of them was for £1 from a company called "infront" in crawley - i have been thinking hard but cant think of any transactions that i have made in the last couple of days for £1 with this company. I want to avoid asking egg to block and resend a new card as this would mean i will be without a cc for couple of days.

I have searched online which shows infront.co.uk as a retailer, but they dont have a telephone number, so i cant call & verify if they tried to charge me.

does anyone recognise this company or such a transaction appearing on their statements?
thanks..

I would just say you don't recognise this customer and egg should just reverse those transactions.
Have egg suggested the card be cancelled and reissued? I've had transactions that I don't recognise before and my card company haven't done this?

On the other hand, I wonder whether fraudsters sometimes try a £1 spend in order to verify the card details/clone they have works. For instance, elsewhere on the Forum I read of a £1 donation to Christian Aid which wasn't recognised by the card owner and where subsequent larger amounts were taken.

I'd certainly look at the Egg account online on a daily basis to see what happens.

Many online companies do an initial low value charge to a card to validate the details and then put the full request through at a later date (often when the order is ready to ship) - the low value request is never actually collected so most customers are unaware that this occurs.

The fact it is for £1 wouldnt be of concern in itself, it is more a question of have you placed any online/ mail order orders recently

I had one of these & cancelled my card immediately on the advice of egg. As stated by LittleVoice people try the card details using small amounts - hoping you won't notice, then the large amounts are taken.

It took egg less than a week to send my new card - good job as well as I was off to the USA to "save some money" - I saved a fortune!

  • Just a thought, it was definitely egg that phoned you wasn't it. Presumably they didn't ask you for too many details as they had them already.

thats a checking amount so it may be the case that it is a genuine transaction but that its larger that £1. you chould phone egg and get some more info on the company- they will have access to retailer descriptions etc.

christian aid transactions usually come directly before massive fraudulent transactions, but it doesn't mean that all testing transactions are fraud. for example when you do your shopping at tesco and other major retailers it will often come through as a £1 transaction for validation.

Isnt infront.co.uk / streets online something to do with buying stuff online through a sky digibox? I could be completely wrong.

yes. the transaction was denied as fortunately "visa" had an issue at the same time when the transaction was performed. so i did not actually get charged £1 but i can, if the company tries to charge again. egg have suggested to cancel the card and get it reissued if i think it is not a valid transaction.
