We were thinking of going camping with a car and a tent somewhere like Southport or Formby area (Merseyside)
Searching the internet for a reasonably priced pitch has proved to be very frustrating.
All we want is a basic site with a basic pitch. No bells or whistles.
I'm getting rediculous prices like £20+ a night or asked to join a club which I'm not going to do for a few nights out of the year
I'd be grateful for any ideas, pointers
Thanks

If you think £20 a night is rediculous then i am here to offer no help sorry. What do you call a basic pitch BTW do you want water-electric-showers-toilets-lights-bins-paths-roads-grass- If its all a no then a pitch in a field can be acheived but then you need to look at CL site with a max of just a few and a membership payment. Site owners need to be paid . Answer this how much would you charge people(2 adults 2 kids and a dog & car) to camp in your garden ? remember you have to prepare for them ,wait for them to arrive clean up after them ,re cut the grass and prepare for the next.(thats basic) lots more if you have facilities & insurance to cover all the above. Good luck with your search P.S dont camp on a feild in Altcar you maybe shafted by tanks. PPS wouldnt do Ainsdale either (different shafted) hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0

I found a hotel in Liverpool that charges £25 a night for up to 3 people. Admittedly it's not the same experience but certainly better value for money when comparing what you get.
I think camp sites charge way out of proportion when it comes to simple camping in a basic tent
Actually since I started this thread I discovered a site for £12 a nightAnd with electricity :j
Btw, my son and I drove down to spain last summer staying at several camp sites in France for as little as £10 a night
Many towns and cities in France have municipal campings set up by local councils so when in France we always look out for "Camping municipal" before looking for any other. They are not always the cheapest but the majority are.
I just like to see a fairer deal for campers requiring the most basic facilities without any bells and whistlesIWasLookingBackToSeeIfSheWasLookinBackToSeeIfIWasLookinBackAtHer.....0 -
I have camped for a long time and the price of a basic site has gone up quite a bit in the last few years as the popularity of camping has increased. Supply and Demand I suppose.
There are quite a lot of sites that charge extra for children or have a reduced price for small tents. You just need to search about for them, the ukcampsite website is useful.
We joined the Camping and Caravan Club which works out to be good value for us because we camp quite often and so we soon recoup the £39 membership fee. We are staying on a lovely site at Easter for £12 a night including electric.
And yes you can often stay in a Premier Inn or Travellodge for less. The problem with this is that you have to eat out all the time and if you have kids this soon becomes very expensive.0 -
Yes, I think £12 a night for 2 people and a tent is quite reasonableIWasLookingBackToSeeIfSheWasLookinBackToSeeIfIWasLookinBackAtHer.....0

have a read over on www.ukcampsite.co.uk there has been several threads about the cost of camping pitches etc.
Some people do seem to be able to find cheaper sites. I've found a basic site for Jubilee week costing £115 for a family of five, tent, car and EHU. Site has a club house, shop and is next to the beach. No pool which has disappointed the youngest, but it seems we can use the pool on the site next door for a charge, but am hoping he'll amuse himself in other ways.0 -
link to one of threads I mentioned is HERE another HERE
there was a thread about sites under £xx but cant find it.
Have a search or ask on UKCS am sure you'll find the answers on there.
