Carers allowance and Housing benefit Premiums

I have been having a lot of problems getting my housing benefit correct. I have finally managed to get them to add on the disabled child premium, and that has been dated back for 2.5 years! However, I get carers allowance, so I believe there should be a carer's premium too.

However the housing officer person insists that the carers is for my son, not me, and it has to be the claimant who is entitled to carers. I disagree, I am the carer for my son, it is MY benefit.

It's now being passed to management, but I would like to know, if there is any rules regarding carers for a child, or if anyone else receives the premium?

ive just had a read and it appears to me that you should be getting both.

it says that although usually only the higher premium will be paid, the disabled child premium is paid in addition to other premiums.

the carers allowance is claimed by you, for you, so it is your benefit.

Im sure I read somewhere that carers and child can def be combined. The argument the assessor was making was that the benefit was for my son and not for me. Which seems absurd to me!

Thanks for those links, very helpful. I have a feeling this is going to go to tribunal :(

I have never had any housing benefit premiums. Should these be paid to me? I don't understand how it works. I get the premiums associated with disability with my SDA but non related to housing benefit.

  • Housing benefit is fundamentally a poor-ness not a disability benefit, its paid to those on a low [savings & investments] income who pay rent.

A disabled child premium of £56.63 can be added for each child in your family who gets Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or who is blind. A child will be treated as being blind if they are registered as blind, or if it’s less than 28 weeks since they regained their sight and were taken off the register.

From a quick google I can't see what level of DLA causes it to kick in, I thought any DLA applied! My son gets MRC, HRM.

I think you should look into it.

I did actually ask one assessor, because ours is up for renewal and she said she thought as long as he continued to get SOME dla, the premium would still apply.

Not that I have much faith in assessors any more! :D I have spoke to one mum on another forum, who has a disabled child and she gets both premiums.

Good luck! I have to renew for June 16th. Really hoping we get the HRM again, or we will not have a car!
