Cos they grow the darned produce in the first place!
If a farmer can't compete with a supermarket by selling direct to the public...(the price he gets wholesale is a *lot* different to what he can charge retail), then he may as well hang up his pitch fork & sell his red tractor.
Truth is...I reckon not many stall holders at these farmers markets *are* farmers...cetainly in the ones held in London at least (this can be confirmed by the fact that none of them have purple noses, say "Ooo arrrh" or have Cow dung on their wellies)0 -
