When changing cars, will the insurance company simply 'amend' the current policy, therefore if 6 months is remaining - you'd still be issued with 1 yr NCD for the policy despite the change?

If you are staying with the same insurer and just changing the car details, then you will gain the full year's NCD.

You only lose out when you change actual insurance company part way through a year.
