Changing driving licence address online, Anyone done it?

I've just completed an application to change the address on my driving licence & photocard online.

When the application was completed it was telling me to cut my old licence in half and post it back to DVLA.

I know that once my new address has been validated that they will send me a new one, but what if there's a problem? I don't want to risk having no licence at all. Could i not keep the old one until the new one comes through.

During the application i was asked for my passport number and it turned out that my passport was over 5 years old and the photo on my passport could not be used. I assume they have a copy of the photo that is currently on my photocard and use that!!!

Just wanting to hear from anyone that has done it sucessfully to put my mind at rest..

Thanks...

I've recently used an online facility to change my address with the DVLA and issued with a new photo driving license (no photo change) and paper-part... can't remember it telling me to post back the old one though, although there is a possibility I didn't read the pages properly :)

None the less, new one arrived just 3 days later :)
  • Thanks. Looks like i can wait to receive my new one before returning my old one then.

If you still have your old licence i can give you the address to post your old licence back to. It says it must be cut in half.

Apparently it's an offence to have 2 driving licence's if i read correctly on the application.

I changed a paper licence for a photo one because the paper licence was falling to bits. I didn't cut it up and send it back until the new one arrived, regardless of the instructions on the website.

Likewise, I just waited until I got the new one to send the old one back.

It seems a bit pointless really as you still have to pay for the postage.

However, since you don't need to worry about the old licence actually reaching them you can just send it second class and if they ever claim you didn't send it, just cite Section 7 of the Interpretation Act 1978 and they will soon go away.

Did ours about a month back and they arrived quickly. The old ones are still sitting on the side waiting to find an envelope ;)

Efficient as the Royal Mil/DVLC combo is I'd certainly not be parting with the old one until the new one arrived safe, sound & correct in every detail
