Closing credit card accounts

I have 2 credit card accounts, one with Barclaycard that's been open since summer 2009 and one with Lloyds that's has been open about a year.

Both cards have a £0.00 balance and the cards were physically destroyed months ago as they werent being used. Infact the lloyds one was never used at all. I want to keep one of them open and get an actaul card for emergencies but will certainly not be using it to run up any balance or debt. I'm not sure which one will be the best one to close. I bank with Lloyds so dont know if it's best to have everything in one place or stick with the one that has been open the longest?

What would people suggest?

Many thanks.

I'm told having a credit card is essential if you want to apply for a mortgage at a future date as without any credit history you might not get accepted so I'd keep them both, use them both for everyday purchases, pay them off at the end of the month and don't run up debt on them.

Thank you for your replies. I will cancel the Barclaycard and keep my Lloyds tsb card.

Moneysaverlog... Many thanks for your advice however I'm already a homeowner and have had loans and credit card balances in the past so not looking to build a credit history. Would definitely be good advice for someone looking to build one though.

    Thank you again.
