Honeymoon in Madeira

We get married in March 2008, and for the honeymoon we fancy a chill out in Madeira. My family went there about 5 years ago. Just wondered if anyone had been there recently and has any views on it. We debated all-inclusive in jamaica (the usual honeymoon stuff), but we fancy just doing nothing for a week in a nice villa type honeymoon in the hills above Funchal. Im in the airforce so constantly on the go and travelling, hence the Funchal idea.
Any views would be greatly appreciated...good or bad

I really liked Maderia when we went, some time ago now, 4 or 5 years. Loads of people said that it was only for "the older generation" (we were in our 20's) and/or hardcore ramblers! But it was lovely though. Beautiful place, wonderful restaurants, food, pace of life, great walks if you want them, really lovely warm weather when we went too (autumn). Get some good guidebooks and find out where to go, would also recommend hiring a car and having a drive around to other parts of the island. Beautiful waterfalls everywhere too!
Hope you have a fab wedding and honeymoon.0 -
Thanks alot reverie,
I am only 22 and fiancee is 23, we are both quite lively but after 18 months of planning, I think we will be ready for a nice chilled Madeira rather than an all happening complex. My family basically said what you said.
This is the hotel/quinta that I am looking at:

It is alittle up the hill from Funchal but runs a courtesy bus and Im told the taxis are quite good.
Thanks again

yeah I've done some real swatting on the hotels there. Im not one of these people that HAS to go 5 star everywhere, but it is my honeymoon so I thought what the hell. It looks awesome, alittle out of the way but what I'm going to need after spending all this year in sandy places because of the airforce. Not the kind of sandy places I had in mind either!
The holiday is about £1600 for the 2 of us, which is alot cheaper than these tailored for honeymoon rip off merchants. talk about targeting a market!
Glad you think its nice too, didn't want to get too lost in the moment. I've been 5 star in Italy before and it was brilliant. Just hope they like my rough Blackburnian accent.hehe0 -
Hi
Good choice. My inlaws live on the island. This is their tea house http://www.jasminteahouse.blogspot.com/. Its in the hills outside Funchal. I have been visiting for years and it is such a quality destination.
There is one hotel we go to for tea. I will have a look if i can find a link for it. Its stunning!!!

Is it Reid's you are thinking of? That's the only one I've been to for afternoon tea.
