Transferring music & contacts on to iphone 3gs

Hi,

I have two main questions:

1) When I try to transfer music from my iTunes library including playlists to my iphone 3gs, a red diagnonal comes up and prevents me from transferring.

2) I have contact cards which appear as Outlook with contact names from my old Nokia E71. How can I import these contacts (about 200 or so) into my the iphone 3gs.

I'd be really grateful for an idiot's guide, step by step, simple for a tekkie dunce ...

I know that when I connect my iphone 3gs to iTunes, there is an index system of apps, music etc with tick boxes for synchronizing etc. I think this may have something to do with question 1). I would really like to understand what everything means and which and why the boxes have to be ticked.

I do have an ipod. The music transfers without the red diagonal to my ipod. I've tried to synchronize the ipod apps etc with the iphone. When I did try, not all the apps appeared on my iphone although when I did a search they were installed and the itunes applications app also said that they were installed. When I tried to sync again, instead of the iphone syncing with the ipod, the ipod synced with the iphone! So after all this frustration, I've now restored my ipod. I've now downloaded most of the apps manually on the iphone so it's the music and contacts, I'm more bothered about. Although if anyone has the answer about this as well, I'd be interested to know!

In other words, I'm having the usual teething troubles dealing with a phone I don't know and not quite being au fait with iTunes which I'd really like to come to grips with and understand what I'm doing and not just follow instructions so that I don't remember why I did what!

On the other hand, if people don't have time and just give me the instructions and it works, I'll gladly accept that too! Ta!
