Anyone done any clinical trials?

Options
Hi, I'm just wondering if anyone has gone down this route? I'm well aware of the risks etc involved, but I need the money. I'm going to a medical assessment next week for GlaxoSmithKline, they pay anything between £200 and £2000, so its a massive amount for me either way!

When I was a student my boyfriend of the time did this - I never would have. The ££££ ones are because they are lengthways and/or involve much more risk so I guess if you had to do it, maybe start with the ones that pay out less.

He did go a bit loopy in the end, whether this was due to the trials or other factors we'll never know.....

I have done them in the past for Covance in Leeds when I was a student. Never had a problem and the safety aspect was always paramount with them.

It's normally very restrictive when you are there though as to what you can and can't do. I used to do them during the easter or summer break and as you were not allowed out during your stay used the time to read and revise.
  • Yeah I'm probably going to look at smaller ones, as the longer ones would be a problem, plus I'd get really bored! I also signed up for food trials at a place near me, they pay £5 an hour and you're normally only there 3-4 hours, so hopefully I'll get a few of those. I like free food.

I know that they generally don't accept females of child bearing age for them.

I used to work for a large pharmaceutical company that had a testing and research facility and tried to reply, this was one of their conditions

  • A friend of mine did this for Pfizer when we were much younger. He said at the time that it was the easiest money he ever made, just sitting around playing on the playstation all day and having injections twice a day. He earnt pretty good money out of it as I recall.

Having said that, it's not something I would fancy.

    Hi all

I have recently been involved in some research to do with pain management, which involved being zapped with a low intensity laser a couple of hundred times.
That is a very simplistic description and what I did is on another thread on this site somewhere.

This was in a Manchester hospitals research dept.
I did 2 visits and received £120 which included travelling expenses.

I am also doing one next week which pays £600 for 4 visits.

I have done this, and would reccomend it. I got paid £550 and had some pressure tests done. I was there probably six hours. Easiest money I had ever earned and yes I would certainly do it again
The opposite of what you know...is also true
  • I did quite a few of these in the mid 90s for Hazleton (now Convance) in Leeds. I believe they still do them and its quite lucrative, if you dont mind been a human guinea pig. The longest stay I did was 12 days continous for which I earned £1800 which was quite a lot of money then for a 19 year old.

The drugs I tested were sometimes quite routine things like ibuprofen and its effects on blood pressure (we had to pedal on an exercise bike while covered in ECG sensors!). You couldnt really do it for a living as you're only allowed to do so many in a year, I think it was 4 back then, with at least 3 - 4 months period between each one.

Also you have to be squeaky clean, any evidence of illegal drug use in your urine / blood samples and you wont qualify to enter the studies.

The regulations are now very tight on drug trials and only "safe" ones make it to humans. Very rewarding if you have a few days to spare. You get paid anything up to £4,800 or more depending on length of study not risk involved. For a quick entry into a study simply visit.
