    In actual fact the majority of prepayment meters do not have a debt being paid back through them.

    Prepayment meters are no more expensive on average throughout the year than the supplier's standard tariff. However you cannot get any discounts on the standard tariff if you have a prepayment meter by going onto a fixed rate, paying by DD or registering for paperless billinh. Additionally, you pay more in the winter and less in the summer on a prepayment meter than you would if you had a standard meter (in order to keep the heating going in the winter).
