Hi all,

I've not watched online films on tv or from laptop on tv before so I need some info please.

I have a Sony Bravia KDL-32NX5 and will like to watch movies from my laptop Dell Inspiron 6000 as I've just subscribed to a love film one month trial. What cables do I need to get?

I think on my laptop I have a VGA point and there's one on the tv too. So do I just get a vga cable?

Secondly, the tv says Lovefilm on it, how can I watch Lovefilm flicks on the tv please?

Thank you.

Well essentially if you have VGA ports on both, just get a VGA cable plug it in.
you want to turn off the laptop screen whilst it's on the TV, so set that all up in the graphic properties (or you may have a function key on the laptop, looks like a monitor).
Best to restart the laptop as well to get the best resolution/recognition.

Then you just "surf like normal" to the website. Instead of it showing on your laptop screen, it should show on the TV. (making sure you're on the right input too) If it's a DVD, then just load up the DVD as per normal use.

If by chance you also have DVI ports (or HDMI in the laptop/tv) you would be better using these connectors. Far better image/resolution

If it's an internet TV with it built in, no idea. presumably you'd have instructions with it on how to access the internet content. Unless it's also wireless to do that, you'd presumably need to plug in an ethernet cable (internet cable)

Also VGA cables are video only, The sound still comes form the laptop speakers.

HDMI output should be able to ouput the audio also. My PC didnt until i made a small change in the BIOS though. Simple enough.

Laptop only has a VGA output so would have to be connected with that you can connect sound to a surround sound system (can be mega complicated and depends if you have right slots) or through your tv. Alternatively you could burn it to a disc but it seems the laptop doesnt have a dvd writer?!

Personally i would buy a new laptop with HDMI socket or owrk out how to use the internet TV, sorry i cant help on that, never used one.

It's a bit ridiculous and totally unnecessary to suggest getting a new laptop. Basically what you need is a VGA cable (£2 from amazon) and a 3.5mm stereo cable (42p from amazon). Connect the VGA port on the laptop to the VGA on the TV, and connect the audio cable from the speaker/headphone socket of the laptop to the audio input of the TV (will probably be labelled 'PC In' or similar). Switch the TV to VGA/PC and you're sorted
  • Depends on your lap top. I have connected mine up to the TV. You need a VGA cable. Set up a screen so that it is 1366 by 768, as the main monitor. If you are using Vista or later, you can set the thing up sop it runs with the Screen locked down. This is somewhere in the power settings for the thing.

We use the BBC iPlayer, the Radio player and all our music catologue is on the laptop. We think it is great.

As above if your TV is able to do Lovefilm, don't bother with the laptop, sign in through the TV.
  • Thank you all so much for the info. I've used an Ethernet cable to connect the tv and router. I think a Sony tv needs an expensive dongle to connect wirelessly; if it can be done cheaper please let me know. Withs the Internet tv connected I can watch love film free etc.

Re connecting the laptop to use my tv as a big screen I'll buy the VGA cable and audio cable.

    Do have a lovely Easter!
