I know what you mean about sweet - it's a very strange taste.
btw, if you want to wean kids off them, many supermarkets sell the turkey escalopes and you can flour/egg/bread them yourself and pan fry

So basically there is no risk of diseases such as Lupus or MS, but "headaches, mood alterations, insomnia, dizziness, and fatigue." and "abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting".

Which are regarded as "very few mild side effects". IMO they don't sound particularly mild, and the report says nothing about why these side effects exist. Its not the most reassuring report I could have read about aspartame.

I'm sure as a committed OSer you're as fit as a flea and haven't needed a pill in years... But if you had read a lot of the info leaflets in medicines lately you'll struggle to find anything at all that doesn't list the above as symptoms. Unfortunately for me I take a lot of medicines and so I've read a lot of leaflets. It's got to be a bit of a standing joke in my house about the standard conditions they warn you about with anything at all that has been clinically tested. So much so that when I get a new medicine (happens a lot) boyfriend and I are having a jokey bet on which one gets the first mention on the "side effects" part of the leaflet. The real beaut's are when you get a direct contradiction like that it can cause weight loss and it can also cause weight gain! Oh the perverse sense of humour we share! :rotfl:

Ok but truly, go through your medicine cupboard, prescription or OTC, see if you can find anything that doesn't apparently potentially cause emotional disturbance, fatigue, dizziness, weight changes, headaches, insomnia, nausea and/or tummy upsets (either way, soggys, solids or aches).

Throw in may cause anaphalactic shock, can cause irritation to patients who wear dentures, and in rare cases has been linked to asphyxiation, to that set and what have ya got?

    Anyone?

    No?

    Strawberries.

Think about what it'd say for a cup of tea!

So personally, I'm taking no notice. Something else'll be a toxin tomorrow.

Oh and also, as to why those side effects exist...

In a clinical trial if even one patient reports a symptom it has to be listed. Over the course of ones life one is going to have unexplained tummy trouble, aches and pains, fatigues, headaches etc. So of course the trial volunteers also get these things. However it'd be unscientific not to document a symptom if it is mentioned and it'd also be unscientific not to get the volunteer to mention everything about themselves. Volunteers are also paying minute detail to everything they feel during a trial too, so headaches you may have totally brushed off at work and got on with your day in spite of, now become noteworthy. The volunteers on clinical trials notice every little thing thier body does, the researchers write it down and it ends up on the side effects leaflet.

Hence why if you read a lot of side effects leaflets you see the same patterns over and over again. The more common a medication is and the more widely used the more trails get done with it and the bigger the list of the usual supects on side effects sheet gets. After you've read a few you get a feel for which ones to mentally screen out as trial data debris and which ones to notice.

So of course if they put a food additive through trials it's gonna end up with the old faithfuls on the info leaflet too.

I get pigs trotters and pigs head free from my local butcher. I make pate and brawn, pearl barley mutton broth with cheap scrag-end. Does anyone else make this sort of thing? Is the world stuck in fast food mode?

I would not even know where to start with those ingredients, but in this case it would not be because I had forgotten how to but I would like to think because I am too young (47) to know what the ingredients are ;)

I'm not,I can bone out a chicken & know how to cook various meats.I often buy chicken thighs as opposed to breast, bone them out & make a curry ect.I think people are scared of cooking, they are scared of prepping meat & I blame the media. How many adverts are the on TV for antibacterial sprays's? People see the advert & "I'm not touching that..I'll get salmonella!" sort of attitude creeps in.

    Hi oldtractor,

I think that this board is testimony that most us haven't forgotten how to cook, so you may be preaching to the converted. ;) I cook from scratch and make the most of cheaper cuts of meat and veg in season, make homemade soups, bread and cakes on a regular basis.

We have existing threads on both things that you've mentioned:

    Pigs Trotters

How do you cook a pig's head?

These threads may interest you too:

Be honest...how many meals cooked from scratch?

This is one reason why Old Stylers cook meals from scratch and avoid ready meals!

One of us will merge your thread with the last thread later.
