Recommend me an external hard drive

for storing my photos on please. I don't want to pay too much either (this is MSE after all :D )

  • There are loads of portable 2.5" hard drives 320GB to 500GB available at around £60. Amazon and EBuyer are good sources and really there's not much to choose between them. I've had Buffalo, WD, Samsung, Toshiba and all have been fine, so I usually buy the cheapest at the size I want.

Photos don't take up that much space, unless you're a professional or storing lots of RAW images, so you could also consider a USB drive or SD card. A 32 GB USB drive at around £13 or a 32GB SDHC card for about £18 from 7dayshop will store a lot of JPEGs.

Whatever you buy, be sure always to have a second copy safely burned to DVD or CD. Hard drives do fail eventually.

better to use as a backup, along with blank dvd's, if by storing you mean the only copy.

probably need to post approx capacity to get a recommendation, as there are far too many options out there - or check hotukdeals, ebuyer, amazon, scan etc.

1 piece of advice stay well clear of Western Digital drives, the company used to have a good rep when it came to hdds, but it seems they cant be considered very good at the moment.
2 years ago i bought a WD 3.5in 1.5tb hdd internal, 8months later hardware error and got replaced, 14months later that had to be replaced. any hdd should last at least 5years with 0 problems, compare that to my samsung 1.5tb bought 3months before the WD, working perfectly and hasn't been replaced once.
  • I use blank DVDs, just store them on that. I use Lightroom 3 to catalogue photos, though there are others such as Aperture. You may have to pay for these.

Samsung uses Seagate drives. There are only three HD manufacturers left.
  • This look a pretty good buy.
