Crikey - expired license

Hi

I came across my driving license yesterday as I'd been meaning to get my 3 points taken off which were earned in 2008. However, to my shock, I noticed that they had sent me a license which would run from 2008-2009 (passed my test in 1999).

So effectively, my license has been expired for 3-4 years...

What's the upshot of this? Obviously I take it I can't drive, which puts me in a bit of a position with work, but are the DVLA going to do something crap and tell me to retake my test?

I sent the license off in 2008 to get the points added due to an SP30 speeding offence, why would they return a license that wouldn't last more than a year?

After a quick google, I definitely received no notices to have it renewed or updated and have been taxing a car all along that time too!

Relax unless you are old all that has expired is your photo card. http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/NeedANewOrUpdatedLicence/DG_078070?CID=Motoring&PLA=url_mon&CRE=renew_my_photo

Just send off for a new one and keep driving, the fine is not an automatic one.

If you did not receive a renewal form, have you checked that the address on your licence is your current address. If its not the case you better get it corrected asap.

  • If you have the new style Passport, you can renew you license online without having to supply a photo, you just put your passport number in, that's how i renewed mine and i got the new card back within a week.

The passport has to be less than 5 years old.

Your licence is valid until you are 70. As has been said, it is only the photocard that has expired. Very easy to renew at the Post Office as they take the photo there and send it off. OH did theirs on a Saturday and got the new licence back on Thursday.
