I'm all in favour of fixing things when possible, but with an Advent (PCW own brand) I'd not want to spend more than about £60.
A friend of mine bought two of these for his kids, both are now little over a year old (the laptops, not the kids) and the hinges are cracking and detaching. The flimsiest/worst build quality I've ever seen in a laptop-he was going to buy Samsungs, but they bought these because they liked the colour-doh!
If you don't sort the overheating out ASAP then it'll burn out before long anyway.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

have to agree with mac - a number of the later-model (2-3 yrs) advents have been relatively flimsy, modena comes to mind from personal experience. It really depends on which manufacturer they've bought them in from, as advents are all re-branded (mainly american) makes :(

However, ANY lappy, if not used correctly, will build up a furry slug within the fan housing and overheat......the name "laptop" doesn't mean you should use it direct on your lap (or carpet, duvet, cushion, etc. ;) )
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

The soundcard is actually a USB one on a separate daughterboard with the sockets on as far as I'm aware. As the bottom of the laptop has to come off to clear the muck out of the fan, the soundcard can be swapped out at the same time. They usually only go for around a fiver on Ebay as they don't go wrong often.
