out-of-date cheque

A question for the bankers among you:
I have an out-of-date cheque in my position for several hundred pounds. Its actually a few years old now as it fell down between a set of drawers. Obviously it can't be cashed now in its current form. My quandry is..have I a legal claim on theses funds or because I failed to lodge them have I no further recourse?
The company it's drawn on are ignoring me..funnily enough.

I have had out of date cheques in the past, but luckily enough the companies have always re-issued them for me.
Sorry, I don't know what the legal implications are... but I would try to get hold of someone in the company any way possible, phone, letter, email.0
