It's really really sad, genuinely so.

But it's the reason I don't buy/sell anything that costs more than £20 via ebay. Paypal / Ebay (same company) have more terms and conditions than a politician's manifesto.

There is NO safety selling expensive things on the internet, none, regardless of how desperate you are for the money.

Happens all the time - shame you didn't see all the advice on here first.

Never let them pay via paypal on collection items and never let them arrange their own courier, which in this case was probably the scammer. But even a real courier would have done you no good, as only the person who orders the courier can claim.

Sorry to hear of your experience, Op, I really feel for you.

I'll reiterate what techspec says that this is a well-known scam and one should NEVER accept Paypal payments unless you have proof of delivery. In particular, if the item is to be collected, insist on cash-on-collection.

Your experience shows Paypal in their true colours. eBay/Paypal are primarily concerned with maximising their profits and have very little sympathy with anyone who is a victim of a scam.

i didnt read all the post but got the first part and the same thing happened to me, i listed 2 brand new laptops on ebay and someone local won them and paid via paypal, he said he wanted to come and collect so i rung paypal and explained and said is there anyway the payment could be reversed and explained that they were coming to collect and they lady on the phone said no dont worry everything is fine go ahead and hand the items over, so i did, the transaction amount was about £800 so i withdrew the full amount from my account and like you within a few days i had the email saying the were disputing the transcation.

we'll i was in tears for about 3 weeks because i certainly didnt have £800 to pay back, but lucky for me because i was wrongly advised by the paypal advisor they finally caved in and said that because i was a valued customer that they would let me off, they had obviously listened to the call and realised what the woman had told me. it's so easily done and you trust people, whats worth with me is the guy actually came into my house to collect the laptops and he only lived about 20 minutes away from us. i felt so stupid but i have learned a very big lesson and i have since cancelled my paypal account and i no longer use ebay.

My buyer actually left feedback praising the product & then claimed he had not received it. As I did not have a tracking number he got his money back!
