  • Try Aldi can'tremember the price but it is cheaper than £1.99. Think it maybe a smaller pack but still cheaper .

£1.09 for 1kg of Silver Spoon in Tesco apparently - that's on mysupermarket, not sure if it's an offer or an error as the 500g bag is £1.19!
You could use granulated - don't usually notice a difference (my nan never saw the point of caster sugar and always uses granulated in her cakes), but you could blitz it in a food processor/blender to make it smaller like caster sugar (just don't overdo it or you apparently end up with icing sugar!)

Edit: Silver Spoon is listed at £1.09 on Tesco's own website too - works out cheaper per kg than the Tate & Lyle stuff, nearly on-par with granulated.

I second using granulated sugar, it doesn't make a discernable difference :)

Put some granulated sugar in a blender and blitz it. Too long and you'll end up with icing sugar and not caster!

I agree with the others who say to just use granulated - makes no real difference unless you are making meirangues (damnit, how do you spell that? Just typed it out about 4 different ways and it still looks wrong...) or other delicately textured treats - in which case blitz it. A (clean) coffee grinder works too!
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!

Thanks for the replies, I think i will just use granulated instead (at least its something i can use the magimix for ;) ) Im sure i have seen that cheap in b&m or homebargains.
I never normally buy it as i use sweetners in my tea ( darn weight watchers )

    Thanks again

I buy my sugar from Poundland, 1.25kg for well, a pound :rotfl:

I usually do buy caster sugar as well, but sugar is sugar, so I will be using granulated for baking from now on x
Can't think of anything smart to put here...

I personally find that in alot of baking recipes using caster sugar DOES make a difference and in light textured sponges etc it makes a very big difference. I personally go down the route of whizzing up granulated as caster is a rip off!!!

I was thinking ... would it be ok to use granulated sweetners instead of sugar ??? - this is normally pretty cheap in b&m and better for the diet ;)
