I have just realised that I didn't cancel my automated renewal policy, before I set up my new policy with a different insurer.
Unfortunatly it has been over 6 months paying twice for car insurance for one car.
Does anyone know if i'll be able to claim money back from one of the insurers?
Thank you

yes you can as long as you provide proof to the insurer you want to cancel with that you have been insured elsewhere. A copy of the certificate from the company you wish to stay with will be enough.Baby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Tired.com! :j0

I think thats a bit of a generalisation. I would imagine either company will charge at least an admin fee and may well just take it as a cancelled policy and not pay anything back on the basis that cover has been provided for the ongoing period. A bit of sweet talking may be what is needed here.0 -

In the major insurance company I work for and other insurance comapnies I have worked with in these situations, this is what they can do. Granted you have to tell then what you want as it wouldnt be offered but as long as you can provide proof of alternative insurance you will be able to do this.Baby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Just a general question thats been bugging me for a while (not really related to the post), if you were to garage/sell your car and not drive, how would you explain this to the insurers cos you wouldn't have any alternative insurance?0

If you sell your car then you would need to give them a copy of the bill of sale or the confirmation you get from DVLA when you advise them of a change of owner. The insurance company can then clearly see when you were no longer the owner of the car.
If your car is garaged then really you should have advised your insurance company of this at the time so that would be down to you I'm afraid.Baby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Tired.com! :j0 -
I have discovered that I have done the same thing with contents insurance not twice but three policies. All done through LyodsTSB I thought that if they set up the new direct debits they would cancel the old. So silly old me did not check until I applied for an IVA when it was pointed out to me. Could any of you tell me how or if I can recover the money they robbed from me.0

There is a lesson to be learnt here.
Check your statements at least once a month. It will not take long.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0
