Bad luck OP. This happened to me a few months ago - my hacker was based in Southern Scotland though!

Passwords/passphrases should also be different for each website/application, most people will usually use the same password for their email, Facebook account, online banking etc.. which is very insecure.
This is much more likely than the password having been brute forced.
If email addresses and passwords are shared amongst multiple sites, it only needs one site to be hacked to open the door to the rest.What goes around - comes around0 -
Happened to me couple of years ago, my email address was a hotmail one, which they hacked and then reset the FB password through that. I was a little upset :!

I got hacked into a couple of years ago on Facebook the hacker started sending abusive posts out, had an e mail from Facebook that told me I had been hacked into so I left and never went back.0
