Saxophone repairs

My saxophone has stopped playing. The quote I have been given for a repad is 3 times what the instrument is worth. Should I do this myself and how should I go about it? Any advice?

    Stevie Wonder?

    Saxaphone?

You play the piano, not the saxophone.
  • Okay - I'll explain.

I took it to a music shop as one of the springs was broken, they fixed that, but noticed that the pads were very worn down and in fact needed replacing. They quoted £200 to do it, or would give me £50 for the sax if I wanted to p/x (which I dont). I've looked briefly on the internet and have seen repair kits for about £85 with the tools and parts for the job, however it seems a bit tricky and maybe just be throwing £85 away if not done right. I wondered if anyone had done this or knew of someone who could do it (I'm based in Portsmouth).

PS Stevie Wonder is a ledg and although piano is his main thing, he can turn his hand/ear to most things musical!

have you played it since you got it back? if it works leave it alone :-)

I heard some funnies from my sax tutor about self repairs, particularly like the one about a chap who tried to solder a key back on, only to find the heat from his soldering iron caused all the other keys to drop off :-)
