You'd think they'd just stick a second floor in and give them all a bit more space.

I also find it quite strange / incident waiting to happen that they're all allowed to sit there with their guns...You'd think they'd lock them up for the flight...

The room they have looks no worse than economy on any European/US long haul airline.

It looks very spacious to me. At least they can put their feet flat on the floor in front of them which is more than I can do on most economy airlines.

You could probably fit more into the C17 aircraft, though the seats in the middle are on an aircraft pallet, which is rolled on & off as required.

This ensures a fast turn around from seats-cargo within hours. I have seen many a helicopter in the back of one of these, they just need to remove the blades.

Much more comfortable than the RAF Hercules C-130 transporters, that used to get used for passengers.
The hold was packed with equipment and stores, and the passengers had to sit around the perimeter of the hold with their backs to the bulkhead.
Freezing deck, ear plugs all the way, ration pack served up by some hairy Flt Sergeant, and the loo was behind a curtain.
