Replacing (external) Gas Meter Housing?

Can anyone tell me if this needs to be done by the gas company or specialising in this sort of thing? Or can/will a general builder do it?
Ours is truly not in a good state (meter itself is fine, but the housing cupboard on the side of the house is in an awful state). We are thinking of selling our house... so would like to replace it.
Thanks

you will need two/three people, your gas transporter to disconnect the gas supply & remove the pipe, a GSR engineer to disconnect your side of the meter & pipework & someone to take the box out & replace it, then re-connect everything, which ever way you look at it, it is not gonna be cheap at all.I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.0 -
Mine is outside in a wooden box and I would have no qualms about replacing the box myself.
As long as the meter and/or pipework does not have to be disturbed or disconnected, I cannot think of any reason to get in the gas transporter.0 -

does your box have a back to it ? if it does how are you going to get it out & replaced without disconnecting everything, my post was assuming the op was talking about a box built into the wall, maybe the op can be abit clearer on the type of box they have.I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

Yes, I thought it was. Because the OP said their box was on the side of the house, I assumed it is like mine and can be lifted off leaving the meter in situ.
Like you say, we need more details.0 -
Thank you very much for your replies - I will have a good look tomorrow.

Thanks again. I have now checked and, yes, the housing does go all around the meter (the pipes to go through holes, but the meter is screwed to a plate inside the meter box. Doesn't sound good...
Anyone know if there is some "simple" way to do this? Can you pay British Gas to send out an engineer to replace it?
Thanks

Actually, on closer inspection (although I haven't measured yet), the current meter APPEARS to be one of these (or very similar) and I believe that the outer box (or over box) is replaceable.
So if I check the dimensions and get the husband to check everything for me (make sure that the box DOES just slip off - I think it does), hopefully this will work.
Has anyone got experience of replacing one of these overboxes? Very very easy?
Thanks

you can change this one yourself, it is normally fixed by two plastic pins on the outside at the top (at the back), put a flat screwdriver under them & take them out, lift the box off by pulling the bott out towards you, if it doesn't have pins then just pull out the bottom & take it off, to put the new one on just do the opp, just make sure the slots go in the right place at the bott, hope you get on ok.I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
