bill payment and paying a person are different options on Lloyds TSB, and I would assume most other banks

Bill payment only pays a given list of companies (eg credit cards, gas and electricity suppliers, water companies, council tax etc)

Paying a person is used for paying anyone else (including paying yourself if you have an account with another bank or paying a company that isn't listed on the bill paying service)
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)

They aren't really different. On Lloyds, under "pay a bill", there's an option at the bottom to enter company details manually. Then it's the same as "pay a person" except that there's a box to enter a reference.

Don't do that. The company may have trouble figuring out who sent the payment or what it's for. The only information they'll have is your bank account name.

You should use the manual option under "pay a bill" and give your invoice number or customer account number as the reference.

When paying society subscriptions, it'll help the treasurer no end if you use the reference box to supply your membership number.

I use the same method to move money between my own accounts, and I use the reference to indicate which banks I'm moving the money between. This can be useful if it shows up on statements.

Further to my post from the other day, I had a really good Santander experience today. I did raise a complaint about how my original complaint had been handled, and today got contacted by their 2nd line complaints team.

They were profusely apologetic about the way my original complaint had been handled and promised a full internal review and relevant improvements. It's reassuring, and I believe them, that they are trying to reduce the pain for their customers, and for themselves.

I was also offered what they called a gift (worth about £20-£30, I reckon) and which they will send next week, and they have put £50 into my 123 account by way of compensation for my time and costs.

Nice gesture - though I hope there won't be another episode I have to complain about.

    There's hope then ?

Yes, the manager phoned up the recipient and said he was sending the money, everything had been checked and was OK.
    2 minutes not 2 hours.

the checking will be anti-money-laundering manual checks, 2 hours is good going.
    But there's always one....
