Yesterday Auto Bild magazine (the German Auto Express mag sister publication) released a 190-page 2012 TÜV (Technischer Überwachungs-Verein / Technical Inspection Association) used car reliability survey for most cars available in Germany.
The Yaris scored very well for build quality. The only issues they found were clutch on the 1.0 petrol (they think it is underpowered and wears the clutch too quickly), starter motor, semi-auto transmission and water pump issues. The 90hp diesel gets good marks. Also they find the suspension quite hard, but very durable. There were recalls for electro-mechanical throttle, seat belt tensioners in the B-pillars, and side bags and head restraints
The below chart indicates the main problem areas for particular age - they are mostly green (your average Corsa/Clio/C3/207 are all orange and red) - red = bad, green = good.
Fahrwerk: chassis (component corrosion / front and rear axle / steering play)
Licht: lights
Bremsen: brakes (brake effectiveness / brake lines quality)
Umwelt: environment (exhaust / engine management)"Retail is for suckers"

I had a W reg Yaris - basic model no power stearing 1.0 litre. Drove for 5 years 60000 miles only changed oil & filter, air filter + 4 tyres.(no new brake pads, exhaust or battery).
Gave it to a DD for a 21st birthday present - written off after she had owned it for 2 weeks.0
