Stick with the bank or go to the ombudsman?

I submitted my claim to Barclays on January 25.

They wrote back three times: Once to acknowledge receipt of the claim and twice to say 'we will respond to your claim by March 26'.

On March 26, they wrote again to see 'we've still not completed our investigation but hope to do soon'.

Now ten weeks is up, I could go to the ombudsman or stick with Barclays' investigation.

What should I do?

They are keeping you updated, so I'd wait it out for the time being if I were you. The Banks are inundated with PPI complaints at the moment, due largely to unscrupulous Claims Management Companies submitting claims for just about anyone they can sign up. The Ombudsman is guaranteed to be a far slower route, with even the most routine cases taking months.
See what transpires in the next few weeks...

I'd stick if I were you. Moneyineptitude is right about the timescale.

Barclays do have a habit of throwing out complaints by saying they were preregulated and outside FOS jurisdiction (when they are not because they were covered by the old Banking Ombudsman) but they have not done that which suggests they are investigating.

That is not, of course, to say they will necessarily find in your favour but the same could be said of FOS.

Thanks, both of those bits of advice are helpful.

My account was with egg between May 06 and Nov 11 before egg sold it to Barclays, who claim the delay is because they can't get my paperwork from egg.
