European Breakdown Recovery

Take 2!

We're planning a trip to Italy in the summer and will be towing a boat with an X-Trail. The boat trailer is approx. 7 metres long. I started another thread and some people suggested ADAC in Germany. However after trying to contact them twice by email and once by the online form on their website and having had no reply I have no choice but to rule them out. I've started this new thread because that one has spiralled off into an ADAC policy related topic.

Does anyone have any experience of Breakdown Direct? They charge £31.45 (+£20 for trailer/caravan) for up to 18 days of cover. They also cover your journey in the UK to/from your point of departure.

Any other suggestions welcome, it does not have to be an annual policy (we money savers know we can pick up breakdown cover in the UK for < £20) it just has to cover the 16 day period that I will be in Europe.

    How big's the boat?

"Caravans & trailers can be covered for an additional supplement. They must not exceed 8m in length, 3m in height and 2.25 in width."

And I can't find any t&c's on what trailer cover is.

Do they cover you if the trailer breaks down independently, or just recover the trailer if the car breaks down if you pay the supplement?

The total length of the trailer is 7m and height probably less than 2m. The trailer itself is most likely 2.25m or less but the boat hangs over the side of the trailer. I'll need to measure and if the boat is wider than 2.25m then call them to clarify what is covered.

Good question about trailer breakdown, I'll need to call them to clarify that as well.

Well it took 14 minutes to get an answer from Breakdown Direct. I'm still waiting for an answer from ADAC more than 14 days later!

The trailer is covered whilst it is attached to the towing vehicle. So for example if a wheel bearing goes while towing then it would be covered. They noted that a serviceable spare wheel must be carried, but I got that from the policy documents and it goes without saying anyway.

The trailer must come within the dimensions, there are no policy options for larger than the stated maximum so it is going to come down to how wide my boat is.
