Or you could vote in the people who many years ago stopped free milk for schoolchildren / the people who introduced the POLL TAX which meant every person in a household had to pay rates now called councill tax whether they were waged or unwaged / many pensioners were sent to prison beacause they could not pay / there were mass demonstrations with protestors protecting peoples homes from baillifs trying to seize poverty stricken peoples goods who did not have the means to pay / this rotten tax eventually brought down the Tory government / i could go on and on ....... Peoples memories seem to be short ..... then there are those who are too young to remember .:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
Hmmnn removal of free milk Vs destruction of the UK economy and the giving away of a large proportion of the UK's Gold reserves. Not really comparable.
I actually think that the Poll Tax was fair enough, why shouldn't everyone pay towards the emergency services, council services, road repair and all the other services that our local taxes go towards?
Lots of people could afford to pay it - they just refused to pay it due to political reasons. The poll tax was a fair tax that was badly applied. Do you believe that the rates were any better, or indeed the community charge that replaced it?0 -

@Wrinkles.
I suggest you should consider reading :-

Before commenting further in this area of taxation.

Edit
I always thought the Council Tax replaced the council rates. I had forgotten that the Poll Tax/Community Charge existed from 1989 to 1993.
I am sure the Poll Tax suggestion was meant as an April Fool's Joke.

Yes i do ......The Poll Tax doubled the amount of rates that a pensioner couple would pay.......a lot of them law abiding all their lives felt strongly enough to go to prison over this ........A familly with five children all living at home of an age to go to work would pay an extra six times whether their children had a job or not ......the country felt strongly enough to get rid of the Tory party over this ...... now they are back:eek: ...... it wont be long before they try something similar:eek: i cant wait for them to try .
'Children'?
You mean young adults living at home with parents who felt they should not contribute to local services? You now have a household of 5 wage earning adults living next door to a retired couple and both households pay the same for local amenities, bin collections, etc. Is that fair to you?
At least under the poll tax everyone paid their fair share for the services that everyone uses.0 -

I mean hard up familes paying more for a slum council house than the millionairs who lived in mansions / I mean pensioners paying Poll Tax instead of eating or heating their house ....Is that fair to you ?..... The Tory Party lost this argument years ago when people voted them out of power ...... it seems to me some of them would like to reinvent the Poll Tax ...... WELL BRING IT ON BUSTER .
Interesting how we have now moved on from pensioners to millionaires in order to further your argument. However...
Do the millionaires living in mansions use more council services than families living in 'slum council houses'?
I'd suggest that it's the opposite and perhaps if everyone shouldered the burden, it'd weigh less.0 -

As i said the Tory party lost this argument and were voted out of power ....get over it .
And now they are back in power.
You seem unable to argue effectively against a local government tax that all adult wage earners have to pay towards. I doubt that most people could because it's a much fairer system than the current system that has a retired couple paying the same as a family of 4 (or more) wage earners living next door.0
