FTB with no previous suppliers or idea of usage
Hi. I am a FTB having recently purchased a repossessed property. Having contacted the gas and electricity distributors they've confirmed that the hous is not registered to any suppliers - everything was cancelled on repossession. I can therefore choose supplier(s) of my choice, however having never owned a property I have no idea of usage. How do I select the best supplier and tariff? Any help appreciated.

That's not possible, the distributor is incorrect. When anyone asks a supplier to takeover their supply, they take the property, not the person. So, you will have a Deemes contract with whoever the current supplier is.
The only way a property can have no supplier is if its a new build and no one registers it, but that's rare these days was the industry has tightened up the processes and certainly for elec, there was an industry rule to force suppliers to register all properties in their old host region where no supplier was held.
Call them again, perhaps they couldn't find your property and you had an unhelpful person who lied just to give up the call!:rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0 -

Hi with it being a repossession, it'll be a shipper less gas and electricity supply, so you're certainly right, you can nominate a provider.
Rather than looking for cheapest tariff that may save you a few pounds, I would look at who is going to fit a new gas and electricity meter for free. British Gas do this free of charge, so will save you £200 compared to some other providers. Their tariffs will also make it very competitive0 -

Suppliers don't deregister themselves in a repossession case. if the pull the fuse or remote the meter, the supplier is still lie and the site is classed as deenergised.
Certainly in terms of elec, to make it "shipperless", the current supplier would have to request a physical or logical disconnection, a logical won't be accepted if it is a single MPAN site, a physical means actually disconnecting the service. An engineer won't do ttghis without a 100% need for it, so unless they spoke to the customer, builder, demolition company, council, etc...they won't even plan the job. If they did do it, the next customer would have to pay for a new supply,a it months or that, etc and it may be more than £200.:rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0 -
OP needs to confirm if the supplies and metering are still in place. Meters could have been stolen, pipework removed, supply disconnected to make it safe?No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Not sure on gas but in elec, suppliers requests are rejected if future use is detected. This is go protect the future customer from forking out for a new connection project. The supplier also has to provide a contact no, name, billing address, etc for the distributor because a supplier request for physical disconnection is purely a request for contact, the decision to disonnect lies with the distributor.
So, if the house would be sold and reused, they wouldn't disconnect otherwise the new owner would have to wait months and pay for it.:rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0
