HELP! Disputed with insurance company

Hi i am in need of some quick help/advice basically i had car insurance with a conpany last year for 12 months as usual when my renewal was due they sent me an email saying they would take a quarter of the renewal automatically if i did not cancel the renewal and give at least 5 days notice of cancelling before the renewal was due then each month after that they would take a quarter for 4 months to pay for the renewal, each payment was just over £320 per quarter,
I rang 4 days before the renewal due to change of car and address and decided not to take the renewal with them and to cancel it so they didnt take payment and told them they didnt have my permission to take any money, anyway on the renewal date they took just over £320 so i called up to say i had cancelled and wanted my money back, they said they needed 3-5 working days to send my money back but in the mean time to get the money back quicker i could ring the bank for a direct debit mandate, so i did that and ended up getting paid twice, now they want 1 payment back, my argument is though, they took my money without my permission after i said cancel it with 4 days notice and in my opinion why should i give any notice i will get in touch with them if i want the renewal not them just expect me to take it and because of them taking my money i went into a unarranged overdraft plus 3 other bills were paid while in my over draft so got charged £120 by the bank, i wouldnt of been in my overdraft if it wasnt for them taking my money now they are threatening me with a debt collecting company if i dont pay

Were do i stand
I have overed £200 back as they can stand me the £120 bank charges for their mistake but they refused that and said they want it all but im not happy with that at the end of the day its their !!!! up not mine

Can any 1 help please i only have a few days

To be honest, your complaint should be with the bank - if you did the direct debit mandate (effectively saying "this is an unauthorised payment") and the company have agreed that it shouldn't have been taken, they should treat it as if you hadn't made that payment in the first place and not make any charges.

The insurance company have done nothing wrong really, they've refunded you as quickly as they can, offered you a solution to getting your money back faster, and sometimes direct debits changes just can't be processed as quick as you were asking.

Pay them the money you owe them and pursue your bank for the £120.

edit: Most of your 'argument' will get you no-where as well. When you take out an insurance policy, you have to agree to certain terms and conditions, I'm fairly confident auto-renewal will have been mentioned.

Yep, and if there is any doubt there is a clue in the OP.just before the OP says (s)he cancelled it and told them not to renew.

Not at all sure why you think the bank should pay for something that is entirely the fault of the insurance company
