Can you train an old dog?

Our dog is a stubbon 10 year oldish cross (CairnXYorkie).
We rescued him coming up to three years ago now.
His main issues is he will not/can not get on with another dog and isn't great with new people.
We've been trying to deal with this by ourselves due to lack of money for training but obviously are not doing a good enough job (although he has got better with the new people thing - that or we're pretty good at dealing with it now... we do dread children coming up to him on a doggie walk though).
We've come into a little money recently and are thinking of getting a trainer to see if they can help us at all. With these problems fixed he really would be the perfect dog.
Our question is can he still learn?... Is he to old to change his ways?
Could anyone recommend a dog trainer in the Worcestershire area?
Many Thanks if anyone can help.

It might be that you're better off with a behaviourist than a trainer - one who can identify the cause of the behaviour and deal with it from the root, rather than the uphill battle of training new behaviours against the cause of these problems.
http://www.apbc.org.uk will have a list of behaviourists local to you0 -

I go to this training group in Worcestershire

I know that they've dealt with older dogs (I think 14 was the oldest), if they're local perhaps it would be worth a chat and see what they would advise?0 -
I know its not the same but I am still teaching our 11yr old new tricks which he picks up very quickly0

Ann is brilliant .. we have a rescue dog who is attending 'puppy classes' at the moment.
She is a 3 stone 9 month old Lab, never trained and Ann really knows how to handle this type of dog.

Give her a call and she will give you loads of advice.0
