If it's meant to be sweet - crepes with jam is the first thing that springs to mind. My first thought without reading through was french bread!!!

As a teacher myself of primary age children, the last thing we want is to make things more complicated than necessary. We have a potato growing comp up here in scotland - the teacher that did the comp with the stage before I had them before me did the recipe book idea to help raise school funds and recipes went in ths project book. When i did it, Iasked them for homework to try a reipe new to them at home, help make it etc and try it. The reviews went in the project book with photos. We won a commendation and it was judges throughout Scotland!!

Particular french recipes tricky - what about potato dauphinous?- the only one I know!!!

For a French dessert, Tarte Tatin is the obvious one, but it's made upside down and even professional chefs find it quite difficult. How about Clafoutis aux Cerises, which is basically cherries in batter?

PS. Although, crêpes do also have the advantage for kids (and big ones, like me) of sounding like a rude word in English. :)

I know you wanted to make a sweet recipe. but cooking crepes / pancakes with children can be quite tricky and messy.

How about a Croque monsieur (very french and very easy) You assemble the sandwhich cold (so very easy for kids to do by themselves) by putting slices of ham and cheese inside and then either fry it or grill the whole thing. I used to love making this as a kid........ you can put whatever cheese or ham you want. Lots of recipes on the web for this to give you ideas.

    Thanks for the replies,
The kids made the ham toastie things at school already - so i cant do that one, but i think the crepes could be a freat idea, the little one will love it with fruit and nutella and the older one will like a savery one :D

    Thanks again
