Energysmart with British Gas

What is energy smart - how does it work and will it save me money? Are there any drawbacks?

Thank you for your help

You take monthly meter readings and send them to BG, you then pay for what you have used by variable direct debit.
Nice graphs to view on the website, a free electricity monitor.

You save money by switching stuff off.

Its not a bad system from what I've seen/heard but the main drawback is its not available on their cheapest tariffs, which essentially means you are paying more to save money..

British Gas in responding to complaints about complex tariffs has scrapped their cheapest ones. They now only do three, fixed, standard and on-line, energy smart is available on all three.
