Life Insurance for the (very) overweight??

Hi

I am errrmm a well built :D lady in my early 40's. I have tried getting life insurance but nobody will insure me because of my BMI. I have also recently been diagnosed with angina so I suspect that wont help either (although the quotes I did were before this diagnosis)!!

Doe anyone know how/where I can go to to get life insurance? - or is there an alternative?

At the moment I havnt got any mortgage cover at all.

Suepoo x

See if there is anything at the british heart foundation site that can help.

They have a fact sheet giving details of insurers (travel as well as life) who will take on sufferers of heart complaints (though expect to pay extra):

And as far as the weight goes, cut down on the pies/stotties etc!
  • Thanks - I will have a look at your link. As for the pies etc - I do try but they are just sooooooooooooo tempting!!! Thank you ! x

You might not want to disclose this on a public forum but what is your BMI?
    http://www.nhs.uk/Tools/Pages/Healthyweightcalculator.aspx

Who have you tried getting life insurance with?

The reason i ask is some are more flexible than others they all have different cut off points for BMI, once you start getting to about 46 (i think) then you are looking at insurers who specialise in higher risks.

  • Thanks for the link - my BMI is shocking!!! Its 51.1:(.

I've tried LV, Phoenix, Prudential and some other companies I havnt heard of (not 'big' companies).

Looks like im going to have to look at hig risk companies - do you know of any in particular?

God - im still in shock about my BMI!

  • If you google around underwriting criteria you can usually get to the advisor pages where insurance companies list what loading they put on certain BMIs.

This is one I found for Legal and General http://www.legalandgeneral.com/bpcentre/Protection/ViewDocuments/Files/GuidetoUnderwriting.pdf

At BMI > 39 they quote "heavy extras to decline" for life cover and a straight decline for critical illness and income protection. See page 8.

Its been a long time since i did any business for overweight people, off the top of my head i think Zurich are one of the most lenient but i think your over and above their cut off.

For a more specialist insurer, i actually cant think of any of the top of my head, there are some but for the life of me i cant remember their names.

I tend to use Partnership for my impaired cases. It may be worth a visit to an Independent Financial Adviser who will try to place this case with a specialist like them.
