More HDTV questions...

At first I was going to buy a Sony 26", to use as a computer monitor and also for playing my 360 on, and also a PS3 (when I get one).. But NOT to watch TV... I saw how big a 26" actually was, and have now decided I want either a 23" or a 24"...

Also, I don't actually want a TV, someone at another forum gave me the idea to buy this http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=uk&l=en&s=dhs&cs=ukdhs1&sku=59234 which looks good in my opinion, but they said that it is over 1080p resolution - and I find that hard to believe, can someone confirm? If I bought that, how would I connect my 360/and laptop as there is no HDMI connection at all.. You have to note that I want to watch both in full HD (my laptop has a lot of HD videos on that I'd like to watch)...

Are there any other decent models similar that would do the job too.... Possibly with a HDMI (do you even get HDMIs with monitors that aren't a TV).

Thankyou!

  • a standard lcd TV is going to look terrible for day to day PC use - far better off getting a proper monitor and just connecting the xbox via vga.

And yes if you look at that dell monitors spec it has a resolution of
    Resolution : 1920 x 1200
why is it so hard to believe?

Ashok has your laptop a HDMI connector ?

HD refers to the resolution so if you have a HD file at 1080 vertical lines then you will have black boarders on a monitor with 1200 vertical pixals/lines. TV's are playing catch-up with monitors with regards to resolution.

A HDMI connector is just a method of protecting DRM'ed HD content. If your files are not DRM'ed then you do not need HDMI to view them. I am sure somebody will complicate that simple definition, soon for you....

There are now cheaper 20-22 inch screens coming on the market - but even this size will look massive, unless you have a 4ft plus desk to look across at the monitor....

The desk is much more than 4ft! I do want a 23"/24".. I have no knowledge of HD etc.. but I want something that will allow me to play my 360 in full HD (so 1080p) and also watch the HD video files on my laptop in full HD...

As far as I know the benq FP241W is the only LCD monitor with HDMI... but I just don't know how Id connect my 360 and laptop to it, what connections both would use, so I can watch both in full HD.

Appreciate any help, once I know, then I can be sure and can buy! :D
  • most decent monitors should have dvi connnection which simply is a hdmi with no audio. sort of the hd equivalant of s-video to scart i guess. if your laptop has that connection use that. for your 360 you can by a compent to vga adapter from somewhere like maplins but as far as im aware 360 can't put out a 1080p signal. thats the USP of a ps3. it does 720p or 1080i. if you've got money to burn just run the whole lot through an av reciever and swith between the sources.

you won't get black lines. the picture will either just stretch or be upscaled depending on the monitor

And look not quite right  ......... best to let the "movie software" show the picture in it's native resolution and aspect ratio - then trying to fill the screen, imho...... but I see the point if there is a 24inch screen why not fill it...

Just pick up a standard 22" monitor if you want to save some cash.

I run my 360 on my 20" tft no problems. I've got it hooked up via a d-Sub (VGA) connection. I then run my PC via DVI, and can just switch between the two using the monitors controls.

1080p just runs at a resolution of 1920×1080 which larger monitors can usually handle. My 20" tft runs at 1680x1050, but this still very good.

The 24" Dell you mentioned runs at 1920x1200, so is the equivalent of 1080p. I don't think there is a DVI cable for the 360, but you could still run it via a VGA cable.

If I connected the 360 via the VGA cable, would the HD quality be just as good as component?
