I've just had an interesting phone call from an Indian sounding Douglas on 01444390994 telling me that the IP address company sent him an email telling him my computer was infected with viruses, and so on.

well you get the idea?

After trying for 45 mins to get my computer to connect to the internet, without success, I must add, he left me his phone number to call back if I succeeded.

So far he has called 3 times asking if I was successful in connecting and I said no each time.

I kept offering interesting suggestions as to why I couldn't.

I could only connect at night when neighbour was home, I had to wait until network card cooled down, blue light was on continuously, never said which one, and so on, all to no avail.

It was because my computer was telling him it had viruses that was what was wrong.

How could it tell him it had a virus if it couldn't connect to the internet I asked.

You're not understanding what I am saying, the IP company is sending me emails telling me this. And so on.

Good fun for someone with a broken leg stuck in the house.

Passes the time.

Wind them up I say.

He has phoned up another 3 times.

According to Douglas, my computer cannot connect to the internet because of a virus but he cannot get rid of the virus because I cannot connect to the internet.

His only suggestions are to disconnect any wires, reboot the computer, try Google, turn off computer, reconnect all the wires, turn on computer and try Google.

As for the USB wireless network card which I tell him when I unplug it and plug it back in it searches for drivers but cannot download them because it cannot connect to the internet.

I said to him can you not help me to remove this virus which is stopping me connecting to the internet so I can connect to the internet but no the computer has to connect to the internet to remove the virus that stops it connecting to the internet.

Even if I could connect to the internet I wouldn't let him try to fix it.

And what is also bothering him is I refuse to give him my credit card number to pay him £385 to fix my computer until he fixes it.

I also asked him if he could send a signal through the phone line like my ISP sometimes does, he will look into it and he is phoning back tomorrow.

Are they really that stupid and clueless?

You could say that you might pay him if he pops round in person and fixes it? 'Douglas' must be quite local, surely?
And of course he'll know your street address from your IP address...

Tears running down my cheeks at the thought of "Douglas" rubbing his hands together with glee because he thinks he's got a live one:rotfl:
Perhaps you can try macman's "personal" visit suggestion next time.
