  • IA, i have 3 littluns: a 4 yr old who goes to nursery for 2 and a half hours a day (free place)a 2 year old who is with me all the time, but will go for the free sessions from september and a 4 month old!

i can't tell you how absolutely desparate i am to go to work!!! i left work a week before my first born arrived (he came 2 weeks early!!) so it has been 4 and a half years since i've been at work. I am so sad i even buy newspapers to see what jobs i could apply for!

i reckon if you get to see the girls throughout the day, and it would benefit you financially, then do it! For me, we wouldn;t get WTC as husband earns too much to qualify, so by the time i have paid for 2 lots of childcare, it wouldn't be worth me working. However i am looking into voluntary work which pays childcare costs so i am better prepared to go back to work.

wish you all the best with what u decide xx

    Hi IA,

Mine are 11 and 9 now, and that time of them being little is long gone. I now work part time, at their school, so can see them whenever I want. I'm also lucky enough to work term time only, so get all the school holidays with them.

    hiya spud30
can i ask what you do at their school? i'm hoping to get some sort of school based jobs so i get holidays with my kids and not sure what else is available other than teaching & TAs. thanks

It is tough. I had extended leave with my first one, and then got made redundant when carrying the second one. I used the extended time to wean myself off my first. I just loved being with him so much. With the second one I send him at a later time as I felt that he should have similar experiences to the first one, ie nursery at a similar age.

I would say on balance I would go for it. At least it would make continuing breast feeding easier as you could feed her on demand, (assuming your boss wouldn't mind). And you would still see her every day, with lots of different things laid on too.

I want a job that is less than an hour driving away from my house! Are you listening universe?
  • Tough one, my no.1 son is 19 (nursery days long gone - doh) and youngest daughter is 4 (now in reception) 2 sons in between aged 12 and 14, I was lucky when the boys were little 'cause I worked evenings/nights and then got term time job when they started school. When dd came along my husband was able to have her when I went back to work cause he works shifts. I'd go for the job simply cause you're around them all day. Hard not to play favourites though but I'm sure you'd cope! Good luck whatever you decide.

  • Hi IA,

So you will be looking after your little one at work and getting paid for it? Seems a good deal to me!

If you have any doubts about working full time, how about asking if you could go part time?

  • Hi IA, I do not post on here very often, but just wanted to offer some advice. When my first child was born, I went back to work full time after he was 14 weeks old. When my second child was born I had 9 months off for maternity leave and then went back part time 20 hours a week. The pay was quite good for part time too. So I felt I had the best of both worlds. They have both benefited in different ways, but I know I am better off being part time, I am more relaxed and less stressed, so better to be around.

Also would going full time affect ebaying, cashback sites, etc. As you would have to take this into account as you wouldn't be able to do that as much.

At the end of the day you have to be happy, debt can be dealt with over time, but your happiness comes first.

    Good luck whatever you decide.

So your issues are: 1. Get the job for the money and how it would help
    2. Is full time nursery the best things for kids or
    3. Is full time childminding the best solution

Well I suppose that there are risks with both. Childminding gives more 1 on 1 car. Nursery allows the kids to 'minglt more'. Proactive childminders will normally go to groups and get together with other childminders. Have you thought about a Nanny - if you get almost all your costs back via CTC you may you may only have to contribute a little bit. Ultimately if the job enchances your life betters your prospects and brings that DFD left, then it has to be good. Lenny
