Additional cards (Credit Card)

Hi

Can anybody help?

My husband I have booked to go on holiday to Spain in June to a destination where car use is necessary. I have just tried to book car hire and most hire companies are insisting on a credit card. We have a poor credit rating and can't get a credit card and wondered if a friend can apply for an additional card and if so will we be credit checked?

Thanks

:(

What do you mean by this? A friend gives their card details to the hire company? Depends on the rules of the hire company. But probably.

You won't be credit checked itf your friend is the one applying for the card. But they won't be applying for an additional card, as you don't have one. It'll be a new account, in their name.

I just wonder as you say you have poor credit Rating and you want to see if your friend could put you on as an additional holder, will this not damage your friends good credit as this could go down as your one of your friends alias's, which can result in your friend getting credit checked and the lenders going through your report to when he/her applys for credit.

Yes your friend can apply for a supplementary card in your name on thier account. I don't think you will be credit checked but your friend will be responsible for all charges incurred by you and must be prepared to accept this.

You friend will be liable, so it will be them applying for credit not you.
However if their is an accident or damage (or the company say there is) then this will be charged to the card and ultimately your friends is liable.
This is a very BIG ASK of your friend.

If I was your friend I might say yes but only if you took the extra insurance to make sure there was ZERO or a small excess in the event of damage.
If there was a large excess then I'd want to know you had the cash to pay.

I would advise paying extra to make the excess zero or small anyway and look on it as a cost of your holiday.
If you do have to accept a large excess then take picture inside and out before you take the car back and note down any damage when you pick it up.
Some car companies try it on adn claim scratches and keep your excess and it's harder to dispute when they are foreign.
I tend to go for small excess then there is no advantage for them to try it on.
It's a bit more expensive but I look on that as a cost of the activity.

Most cards are very straight forward, you give name, address and dob of the other person and they send that person a card. The account holder is fully liable for all monies spent on any cards. If your friend is willing to take on that liability is down to them.

Having just gotten a new Amex card however with them they ask all parties to sign a form to say they are all jointly liable for all transactions but arguably if they are having trust in you then you should have trust in them too.

Never seen credit scoring done for secondary cards but basic ID/ CIFAS etc checks can be done.
  • Thanks for the info

I am going to give him the money for the car hire before I go. The car company I use has an additional premium you can pay for all inclusive cover and I intend to purchase that.

We can get car hire using our debit card but it will cost three times as much!!

Why does it cost more? I have known hire car companies to take a larger holding amount on different cards but this is returned once the car is returned (assuming no damage etc).
