Keep a watch on elderly/disabled in their homes

Hi, Just thought I would give everyone a heads up in case you worry about your elderly parents or a disabled relative at a home some distance away from you.
If they have an INTERNET connection and a wireless router installed, (my dad has a laptop and Wi-Fi, he is 93), then you can buy (eBay) a Wireless (WIFI) IP Network Security Surveillance Camera with Pan/Tilt for under £50.
Once set up with a computer/laptop they will work without a computer because connect wirelessly to the router and allow a secure user, (you) to remotely see what the camera sees & hears. You can also control the movements of the camera head.
You can do this from your own PC or a smart phone from nearly anywhere in the world!
Obviously you have to agree privacy rules but its a great tool for when you try to contact them when they should be in but get no answer.

Without spending a penny I can access webcams across the world, I could see the traffic in Times Square in NY if I wanted. I fail to see the relevance of your post unless you are suggesting that we use this as a baby-monitor for the elderly?

If I were such an elderly person and it was deemed necessary by my offspring to have remote internet accessible cameras then I would feel that I have failed them and I doubt few elderly would want their own lives being viewed via webcam either.

We all start life being nurtured with aids such as baby-monitors (not in my day but hey), I'm damned sure I'm not going out on one!!!

I agree with all of this. I hope to God that none of the younger generations in my family will ever feel it necessary to spy on me or on my DH in this fashion.

Thanks for that OP, some none tech minded people are probably unaware of the cheapness of high-tech these days.

Of course without spending a penny you can access webcams across the world and can see the traffic in Times Square in NY. Doesn't show you your elderly mother who has slipped and is lying on the floor unable to get up though, does it?

Although it could be seen as an intrusion, it could actually enable and elderly / disabled person to live independently for longer.

I don't necessarily see it as intrusion. I mean, turning the router off will simply stop any prying eyes or disabling the camera will work too. I think it an be an advantage in certain situations.
