Car insurance at 25
Hi,
I should be taking my test soon and will be getting my first car in the next month or two. I'm just wondering about insurance; people have told me it's cheaper for over 25s. Is this true, or just a rule of thumb that over 25s will have a few years driving experience behind them? I ask because I turn 25 in July. If it's likely to make a significant difference to insurance premiums then I will hold off buying a car until then, doesn't seem much point in paying ~£1600 if that figure could be ~£1400 a matter of weeks later. Anyone know anything about this side of insurance?
Thanks.

Why not put your details into some of the comparison sites mentioned in either MSE's Young Driver Car Insurance article or MSE's Cheap Car Insurance article?
Keeping everything else the same, use your age as it is now and again as it will be in a few months time.
Please report back your findings as it may interest others.0 -
Nothing magically happened after my 25th birthday.
From 19 onwards it gradually got cheaper every year (building up NCB helped too) until 25 when by that time it was pretty cheap; although it was cheaper for me at 23-24 because the cost of car insurance did rise for everyone around the time I turned 25.
It's a gradual process in my experience, you can check by using comparison sites, but I don't think you'll find much difference between being 24 and 10 months, or 25 and 1 day.0 -
Way back before computers, significant ages did matter as underwriting was a guess on a yardstick type of science. Now computers take your age down to the day and assess that against their risk history. So nothing magical happens on your 25th birthday but whereas in years gone past there would have been a significant drop in premium, today you are benefiting from a gradual reduction as you age each year.0

As said, it can make a difference, but not always much. What I have found to make more of a difference is adding someone as a named driver thats older and/or has a few years no claims.
I used to add my father and it helped.
I now add my wife which lowers it.0 -
I ran two quotes a few months back, one at 24 and one at 25, both with the same level of driving experience, and NCB, and both were the same prices coming up.0
