Are we not talking about a bicycle here? "Leasing out" and "tax free allowances" for a bicycle. A bicycle can be bought for a few pound unless you want one of the designer ones with go-faster stripes on it and many people have one anyway.

you only have selected shops to buy from and most of the bikes in said shops are very expensive

Nice little earners for these shops. I wonder how they were selected by granting authority. Certainly not on value for money it would seem.

Yep the Health Service Scheme didn't have what we would call value for money cycles, the cheapest 'discounted' cycle was still over £250

They should employ some MSE'ers to implement the scheme and we would all be cycling om £40 Asda bikes :)
I am trying, honest;) very trying according to my dear OH:rotfl:

Like yourself I can't see a need for tax allowances for a bicycle? What about people who simply walk, should they not have allowance for shoes, and perhaps more importantly what about those that use Public Transport, they need better all weather clothing.

When I first heard of this scheme I thought, "Government trying to look as if it is doing something positive", and "wonder how much all this will cost".

Would like to see more people cycling, but is this the right way to achieve that goal? When I was younger I cycled in and out of London, but when I returned to Belfast packed it in because it was dangerous. Now there have been tremendous advances, but I would prefer to see money spent on more safe cycling routes.

By the way there you can buy second hand bikes very reasonably on the likes of Gumtree.

More cyclists = safer roads for cyclists. I welcome this scheme.
