Electricity meter serial number

Hi,

I moved into my flat 2 weeks ago but I still don't know who my electricity provider is.

I called 08456015467 to find out who it is and they could only find the building name as a commercial property and not the individual flat.
They said they needed the meter serial number.

I've given them the 2 numbers that I can find but apparently they are not the serial number.

I do not have a bill and my landlord doesn't know either. What can I do?

Take a photograph of your meter and phone again (I'm assuming you have correctly phoned the DNO for the supply region you are in). Ask them to take you through the photograph. Perhaps you could email them the photograph. To identify the supplier is their job. Do not let them abdicate their responsibility.

That is unless the meter is a landlord's private sub-meter.
  • Hi SanderNL, a typical electric meter serial number starts with a letter and is usually 10 charactors eg.RL70K08797 or DG01K29197 etc

So the landlord doesn't know who his supplier is? This sounds very dodgy so the first thing you should do is take readings off both meters or you could be in for s shock if the landlord has been using the meters but not having an account with the supplier. Its his/her responsibility to manage the property and they are 100% liable for consumption between tenancies.

In terms of the meter number, can you us a pick and I'm sure you will get what you need. As Jalexa mentions, there could be a submeter so we might be able to help rule that out.

What worries me here is that there is no record, it may have been a commercial and the landlord is a bit of a numpty or doesn't see himself/herself to be legally responsible.

Did the property get converted from a commercial? If so, the address might not have been updated to the distributor hence they cant find you. The supplier would do this, but only if the customer (the landlord) doing the conversion informs them.

It could also be a flat above a business where the business has the main meter and the flat uses a private submeter. This was common years ago where business owners would live above their shop, but its not now and the issue remains that they are seen as one property in terms of utilities. Now cheapskate landlords cut costs by submetering as opposed to responsible landlords who get a new supply fitted to the flat.

Can you give some more information please?

    The important things are
    • For flats, to establish that it is actually your meter by turning off the supply and seeing that the meter stops
    • To take a meter reading as the first act when you move in. If you have not done this, take a note of today's reading in your diary.
Once these are sorted, you can take you time over the rest of it.

There's a lot out there with numeric only ones as well ranging from shorter to longer numbers up to the 10 digit maximum. Midlands used to often be such as letter/2 digit cert year/letter/5 digit number e.g. K99g12345.

Any meters fit by Lowri Beck Metering always contain LB in the meter number.

And it gets worse than that.

EDMI meters have 2 numbers on the front which different MPIDs register as they wish. example Msn E11Z03182. Pin 211403182.
Some register the msn or plant number, some register the pin. causing a fair few problems...

Also, meters which dont have as MAP Letter in the serial number are quite often batches brought from the meter supplier in a hurry.
saying that some mops have multiple letters in their serial numbers.. FK04J01234 ect..
