NCD entitlement - can you help?

Hi,

I'm starting this thread on behalf of Janette9, who is new to the boards, and asked me for my opinion via pm.

She is searching for cheaper car insurance.
Her son had a 'fault' accident on her insurance policy 4 years ago. At the time, she had 4 yrs protected ncd.

She asks-

-should she declare the accident as she wasnt driving?
-how many years ncd should she say she has?

If I don't reply to you, I haven't looked back at the thread.....PM me :)

Hi Jan, and welcome to the boards :):)

I would tell your future insurers all the facts, and let them give you a price based on that.
The claim was made against your insurance, so you do have to declare it (unless they ask,eg, for just the last 3 years). You can tell them you werent driving it at the time.
I would say that I had 8 years ncd, protected, with one fault claim 4 years ago.
You could try asking your current insurer what their proof of ncd would say, so that you know in advance what they will write.

Hi and welcome from me as well!

I was hoping someone would know the answer to this as I have just had to claim (my fault) but have got 7 years protected. have been wonndering what this would mean for changing insurers. About to start the renewal process so any advice would be brill.

Will keep you posted if I find anything out

As always it all depends on the question asked....

Most insurers ask for accidents within the last 3 or 5 years so it may be totally immaterial for some insurers now.

Again, the majority ask on a per driver basis... "have YOU had any accidents/ claims...." in which case she does not have to declare other peoples claims.

The NCD will be what ever shows on her renewal notice

If in doubt from the wording of the question you should ask the insurer for clarification... that said though, if it were to be an issue in the future the question would have to be interpreted as written as a lay person would reasonable understand the meaning though avoiding a fight it better than relying on this.

edwara - i think it's a question of asking possible insurers - you may find that some will honour your protected bonus even tho it was with another company, just to get your business:)

HI THERE - YOU NEED TO MAKE THE COMPANY AWARE OF THE DATE OF THE CLAIM AND WHAT IT WAS FOR.
AS REGARDS TO YOUR NCD YOU WILL REMAIN ON 7 YRS AS YOU HAVE NOT EARNT ANYTHING THIS YEAR BUT WONT BE REDUCED
FROM EXPERIENCE, THE MAJORITY OF COMPANIES WILL BE FINE WITH YOU AS WITH ONLY HAVING 1 CLAIM THEY STILL WONT SEE YOU AS HIGH RISK

I had to claim 2 1/2 years ago as someone damaged our car in a car park and left no details. I had protected NCD and never had an accident in my life, been driving nearly 40 years, but loads of companies refused to even quote on renewal.

just to update. Have stayed with current insurer - direct line as they have come back with a decent quote, yes I was surprised to. the service has been really good when dealing with my claim, I have protected NCD but thought the renewal would go up massivle. It is less than last year!

Makes a change to be pleasantly surprised by an insurance co
